Williams, Arizona

Choosing a hotel on the Internet can be a bit of a lottery. Tripadvisor helps but mistakes can still be made, we all remember Debbie's Hideaway in Page, Arizona.... So it is always a relief to open up the door and realise that it's ok. I chose the Downtowner Motel in Williams and it is great! I am actually staying right on Route 66 so the big Harley Davidsons that are littered about the town will be whizzing past my window at the crack of dawn. The railroad runs immediately along the other side of the motel and all of the trains so far have whistled loudly as they have passed by. Exciting. Not expecting to get a lot of sleep though.

I'm really impressed with the room. It is really clean and well furnished. Excessive photo Alert.

There is a jacuzzi!

I love hotel rooms where you can sit just outside the door with a cup of tea.

Williams is a really busy little town. It is the gateway to the Grand Canyon and it is here that you board the train to take you up to the South Rim.

The shops trade heavily on its location on Route 66 and there are some excellent restaurants but we inevitably end up at the Pine Country where the pies are to die for. They also make an amazing taco salad.

We've been coming here since Mollie was in year 5 when we made our first trip to Monument Valley.

There is a strong cowboy theme in the town and every evening there is a shoot-out in the High street.

Quilts on Route 66 is a great little shop and whilst in there I met a nice lady from Cardiff who has lived in Phoenix for 30 years. When her husband was offered promotion he could choose from Basingstoke or Phoenix ..

Samantha helped me choose some fabrics to make a quilt they had in the window. She is training to be a kindergarten teacher and also is learning to quilt.

Really enjoyed seeing Williams again.
