A trip down Big Thompson Canyon.

Today we visited the Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival in Loveland. It was easy to find..

We parked near the gates and walked in although we could have got a lift in a cart!

If you are not a quilt lover you may skip to the geographical bit at the end of this blog!

This is on the to-do list. It's a Swoon quilt.

And here is a 'Dear Jane' quilt. Contemporary quilters often copy this 1863 quilt by Jane A Stickler. Quilters who have no jobs or children I am guessing .....

This is a nice log cabin variation. Can you see the star?

And a cathedral window quilt for Caroline.

There was 3D work.

Not sure about that!

And a modern block quilt after a pattern by Tula Pink.

There was a section for quilts from photos....

..... and a lovely exhibition of quilts from seven generations of the same family.

We watched a demonstration on free motion quilting by a lady who had 'pimped' her machine.

This lovely Gammill was super expensive but nice to see.

In the Hoffman challenge participants had to use a particular piece of fabric in their quilt.

Can you see which piece it is

We spent several hours at the show which was as usual full of friendly people - we even met a lady we had spoken to in Fort Collins the day before! It was quieter than shows in the UK and we were able to see everything and move around easily. We didn't buy tons but we did treat ourselves to a Jim Shore Santa. As we left the quilt show it started to rain...

.... So somehow we diverted to JoAnn's to avoid the traffic!

The journey back up the canyon was dramatic, we stopped at the memorial for the 1976 flood.

143 people died when the canyon was flooded by a 6 metre wall of water travelling down the canyon at 14 miles an hour.

It looks calm today, but last September there were more floods and we saw some of the evidence as we drove through.

We are hungry so we detour to Safeway.

This is what happens if you shop when you are hungry ......

We settled for apple pie and we returned to base.

This base that is.........

We spent some time looking at receipts and weighing our suitcases to see how much cash and suitcase allowance we have left. To increase the space in our cases we then threw away a ton of the paperwork we have collected en route.

Then we set about getting the jelly roll quilt we made at MSQC ready for quilting.

We're off into the Park tomorrow!
