Arches National Park

Today's special at the Moab Diner is Buckwheat banana pancakes, eggs and bacon for $6.50. In the free newspaper we spot an article about a local quilt show and the waitress then tells us there is a quilt shop in town too!
Making a note of this for later we head off into the park which is just north of Moab.
We watch a lovely orientation film in the visitors centre then head off into the park. We stop to look back at the visitors centre and the road which winds through the 'Moab fault'.
The sky is a very different colour to yesterday!!
First stop is to 'Park Avenue'.
Giant fins of Entrada Sandstone.
The park is currently home to approximately 2000 natural arches which have both formed and fallen over millions of years.
This was once a giant arch.
And these were once sand dunes.
Strange huddles of rock.
We follow a Corvette convention - some of them red!
Our first view of an arch.
Turning right into 'Windows' we follow a short trail to view three of the most impressive arches in the park.
This is South Window.
It was busy even though it is still very early.
Turret Arch was quieter.
...And South Window was empty.
In every direction there is something to photograph. This is Salt Valley.
The most famous Arch is Delicate Arch....
It is the most photographed point in the Park and it is 45 feet high and 33 feet wide.
We work our way back to the visitors centre, photographing every angle of every rock.
The temperature is rising..
So we head back to the visitors centre to view the exhibits.
Quickly followed by a visit to the quilt shop.
Of course it is lovely.
With lots of new ideas....
Next stop is the museum for that quilt show which is celebrating 50 years of Canyonlands National Park.
Here is Mesa Arch which we saw yesterday.....
....and horses dancing at Dead Horse Point.
The heat is intense so we head back to base for a cup of tea, some blueberry bread and some sewing!
These are practice blocks for our upcoming quilting day at Quiltique in Las Vegas, more Bonnie and Camille fabric Linda!
Moab is a very small town, this is where we are staying for three days.
The Main Street is wide and busy with traffic going to and from the Parks.
We skipped lunch as we know that the portions are huge back at the Grill!

Another taco salad is ordered, beef this time - well you never know when you might see another one on the menu!!
Back on the road tomorrow........
