Grand Canyon National Park!

It is grey overhead when we leave our hotel in Tuba City.

But as we drive along it looks more hopeful...

We stop at the Little Colorado Canyon, the river will eventually meet the Colorado in a few miles.

We did watch out! It's really early and the jewellery sellers are just setting up their stalls. Overnight we have gained an hour so this will be a 25 hour day! We will need the extra hour as there is a lot to see....

A few more miles and there we are and the skies are blue.

We stop at every viewpoint on our way in to the Village.

Navajo Point and the Colorado River, which has been with us for several days now, winding its way into the canyon.

Lipan Point.

Grand View Point, it was hard to choose which pictures to put on the blog, every one is amazing.

Mather point, named after Stephen Tyng Mather who laid the foundations for the National Park Movement.

Phantom Ranch, far away at the bottom of the canyon. This is the overnight stop for those either hiking or travelling by mule along the Bright Angel Trail.

A friendly lizard.

At the new Visitors Centre the geological story of the canyon is told.

And there is a lovely film projected onto a huge sphere.

Interesting exhibits.

There are big cats in the park but this is the only one we saw.

In the gift shop there is a quilt with a block for each of the nearby National Parks.

Time for lunch at the Maswik Lodge cafeteria.

Guess what? And this is the best one so far, by far. We wrote down all of the ingredients so we can make one at home.

After lunch we hop on the bus to the most westerly point in the Village.

Hermit's Rest.

With more stunning views.

The train from Williams and Flagstaff brings day-trippers to the Canyon.

The Bright Angel trailhead.

This is where the mules descend early in the morning. It's on on the bucket list.

A last look at the canyon before we drive down to Williams....

.... Where there is a really lovely quilt shop owned by Evan Duke. She spent a lot of time talking to us about quilting and showing us pictures of her work, which was lovely. She has offered to come over and talk to our quilting group ( and visit Highclere Castle where Downtown Abbey was made!)

Williams was an important stop along the Mother Road, Route 66. Along the street we meet those Corvettes again, gathered for a convention. We count over 70!

They are everywhere.

Further along the road we meet this guy...

And there is a shoot out in the street as four cowboys argue over the proceeds from a recent bank robbery.

Of course there is a cowboy band singing along in the background. The atmosphere is lovely, Williams is a very friendly town.

With plenty of nostalgia.

It's been another long day so we are soon tucked up in bed at the Highlander Motel. Williams is a town full of little motels.

Tomorrow will be a Very Long Day, our longest drive of the trip...........
